Balyasora – Udalguri Project

Bringing Learning Closer to Home in Majbat, Udalguri

Balyasora in Udalguri is a vibrant evening learning initiative that uplifts children from ethnic and underserved communities through education rooted in local context. The project is designed to address literacy gaps, promote life skills, and foster holistic child development — all with strong community ownership.

What We’re Doing

Community-Run
Evening School

  • Operates six days a week from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM
  • Caters to children aged 5–17, including current students and school dropouts
  • Classes focus on English, Assamese, Math, and Science
  • Blended learning methods using songs, games, and storytelling

Community
Engagement

Parents, teachers, and local leaders collaborate through three committees:

  • Matri Gut (Mother’s Group)
  • Village Committee
  • Education Committee
  • These groups ensure attendance, smooth operations, and learning quality

Local Youth
as Tutors

  • We follow a Train-The-Trainer (TTT) model - empowering local youth and community members to become confident educators and role models.
  • Tutors are trained and supported to deliver child-centric learning
  • Continuous capacity-building through mentoring and digital tools

Classroom Activities

  • Reading and writing in local languages and English
  • Basic numeracy using hands-on materials like seeds and sticks
  • Life skills sessions on hygiene, discipline, and communication
  • Story-based learning for moral education and imagination
  • Daily tracking of attendance and subjects covered

Positive Impact

  • Children now attend regularly and look forward to evening school
  • Noticeable improvement in hygiene, discipline, and study habits
  • Parents observe increased interest and engagement in learning
  • Children feel seen, supported, and confident
  • Peer learning has increased, with older students helping younger ones
  • Students show improved concentration and classroom behavior

Challenges We're Tackling

  • Language diversity with students from Bodo, Adivasi, and Assamese communities
  • Varied learning levels due to mixed educational backgrounds
  • Learning gaps among school dropouts requiring personalised support

Ongoing Support & Improvements

  • Distribution of books, notebooks, and learning aids
  • Training for teachers in digital tools like Zoom and spreadsheets
  • New desks and benches being arranged
  • Plans underway for an additional classroom to reduce overcrowding
  • Regular check-ins and emotional support for teachers
  • Curriculum adaptation support to handle mixed-level learners
  • Encouragement and mentorship programs for tutors showing potential
